Six Details To Take Into Account When You Procure Hydraulic Cylinders For Your Industrial Operation

Posted on: 21 December 2022

The compatibility of the hydraulic cylinders you use with your industrial application can have a big impact on the productivity of your facility. That's why it's important to take all pertinent details into account when you are supplying your industrial operation with hydraulic cylinders. The following are six details that need to be taken into account when you procure hydraulic cylinders for your industrial operation.

Cylinder capacity

The capacity of a hydraulic cylinder refers to the maximum psi (pounds per square inch) it can tolerate. If your hydraulic cylinders will need to stand up to especially high pressure levels at your facility, you'll want to invest in heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders with a high psi capacity rating.

Heavy-duty hydraulic cylinders with high psi ratings are frequently needed in industrial operations involving the use of hydraulic presses. Hydraulic cylinders that can stand up to high pressures are also frequently necessary in automotive manufacturing applications.

Mounting styles

The mounting style of a hydraulic cylinder can be either a pivot, offset pivot, or fixed mounting. With pivot and fixed mounting styles, the force will be directed to the centerline of the cylinder. These mounting styles are often ideal for hydraulic cylinders that will be exposed to forces of tension or thrust.

Ability to stand up to temperature extremes

You will need to consider the temperature range of the environments in which your hydraulic cylinders will be used. Extremes of both hot and cold can put stress on hydraulic cylinders and impact their operation.

You should discuss operating temperatures with your hydraulic cylinder manufacturer to make sure that the equipment you procure can stand up to the industrial environment in which it will be used.

Stroking distance

Stroking distance is an important consideration when you are determining the dimensions of the configuration of your cylinders. The appropriate stroking distance for your configuration depends mostly on the pressure rating requirements for your hydraulic cylinders.

Pivot mountings

There are numerous types of pivot mounting available including trunnion, spherical-bearing, and clevis mountings. The ideal type of pivot mounting for a given application depends on factors, such as the stroke length and the bore length, of the hydraulic cylinder that's being used.

Type of cylinder

You can choose either welded cylinders or tie-rod cylinders when it comes to hydraulic cylinders used for industrial applications. The design of welded cylinders makes it so that they are stronger and able to stand up to higher pressures.

While welded cylinders are often used in applications involving steel mills, presses, and offshore environments, tie-rod cylinders may be more appropriate for machine tooling and plastics applications.

Industrial Goods and Beyond

When you work in manufacturing, you know there's a wide range of goods to be produced. Manufacturing sheet metal is quite different from manufacturing gears or bolts, for example. However, in spite of the variety in products, there are some basics that remain true regardless of the product. Your processes need to be consistent and precise. You need to have good quality control in place and to test your items regularly. You can learn more about those topics and others right here on this blog, where we focus on an array of manufacturing topics. Start reading, and watch your knowledge base begin to grow.
